Creating Copyright

This section discusses how copyright occurs under law, how authorship is determined, and what rights attach to copyright. Additionally, this section discusses methods of controlling and enforcing copyright-protected material and considerations when working on projects in which multiple people may contribute to a copyright-protected work.

Required Information When Creating Copyright-Protectable Work
How a copyright-protected work may be used will depend on understanding ownership of the copyright.

Ownership Factors
Authorship, Joint Authorship, Works Made for Hire and University-sponsored research agreements are all factors to be considered in the ownership of copyright.

Managing Rights
Licensing agreements, assignments, and enforcement measures are all methods of managing and controlling copyright.

Creating New Works
Creating new works under the collaborative umbrella of UW will invite many questions regarding authorship of work, assignment of rights, securing of rights and permissions.
